Notes from the talk on Easter Octave Day 4

Disclaimer: This content is not by me, but simply notes from listening to the talk given by a fellow parishioner on this topic during the Easter Octave celebrations. I’ve placed this here for my reflection.

CCC 654:

…by his death, Christ liberates us from sin; by his Resurrection, he opens for us the way to a new life. This new life is above all justification that reinstates us in God’s grace, “so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”…

  1. Spiritual Warfare
  • “Be sober and vigilant”
  • Don’t run away but put on the armour of God
  • Are we awake and vigilant?
  • How is the world changing the way we think / act?
  • JOHN 14:2 – In my Father’s house are many dwelling places.
  • Don’t underestimate the deadliness of sin (don’t say I’ll repent tomorrow)
  • I JOHN 3:8 – Whoever sins belongs to the devil
  • LUKE 12:20-21 – This night your life will be demanded from you.
  • Do you protect and nurture your holiness?
  • Temptation is inevitable, but surrendering to sin is not.
  • At the crossroads:
    • Act on impulse or on decision?
    • Addiction = no hesitation
    • Persuasions of the devil vs. Promptings of the Holy Spirit
    • How prepared are we to face such crossroads?
  • How strong is our desire for God? To preserve a good relationship with God rather than giving in to temptation
  • Root of temptation (7 deadly sins) but there is also the sin of omission (being tempted to do nothing) – e.g. Good Sam story
  • 1 COR 10:13, 1 PET 5:9 – All of us are tempted
  • JAMES 1:13 – Temptation does not come from God but from the devil and from within us.
  • ROM 7:19

  1. How we can resist and prepare ourselves

    • Our Father – “do not let us yield to temptation, help us to discern and give us strength to resist.”

  • 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit
    • Eg: Wisdom – desire the things of God rather than earthly things

    • What are you filling your mind with? Is there space for God’s instruction?
    • 1 TIM 6:9-10 – Into foolish and harmful desires, which plunge them into ruin and destruction
  1. –isms of the world
  • Relativism – no right / wrong, no truth
  • Indifferentism – all the same, all lead to the same thing
  • Eclectism – ok to mix and match religions and spiritualities
  • Sentimentalism – making all choices based on emotions
  • Scientism – only believing truths proven by science
  • Materialism – neglecting the faith in pursuit of material things
